API 5L PSL1 Pipe

The American Petroleum Institute specification API 5L PSL1 Pipe is mostly used for the transportation of natural gas and petroleum. These API 5L PSL1 Pipes are both seamless and welded. Their main purpose is the transportation of water, oil and gas from one location to another. The capability of the manufacturer ascertains the size of the pipe.

An API 5L PSL1 Pipe is manufactured by adhering to the specifications laid down by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3183. It standardizes the criteria for the materials, equipment and offshore structures for petrochemical, petroleum and natural gas industries. PSL 1 and PSL 2 are the two Product Specification Levels that have been recognized by the technical committee. PSL 1 includes pipes that are made of a standard quality whereas PSL 2 pipes have additional chemical & mechanical properties and their testing requirements also differ.

Under this specification, the grades covered are A25, A, B. The following “X” grades are also covered: X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80. The two digits following “X” signify the Minimum Yield Strength of the pipe that has been produced in this grade.

Notes:

  1. 0.50% maximum for copper; 0.50% maximum for nickel; 0.50% maximum for chromium and 0.15% maximum for molybdenum. For grades up to and including X52, Cu, Cr and Ni shall not be added intentionally.
  2. For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified maximum concentration for carbon, an increase of 0.05% above the specified maximum concentration for manganese in permissible, up to a maximum of 1.65% for grades ≥ B, but ≤ X52; up to a maximum of 1.75% for grades > X52, but

Other details

Surface

  1. All surfaces have been 100% visually inspected. The surface condition complies with API 5L standards.
  2. External surface of pipe shall be coated with a layer of varnish.

NDT

All pipes will be ultrasonic tested on pipe body and pipe end as per API 5L standards:

  1. longitudinal: 100% of the pipe surface
  2. pipe ends not scanned by automatic ultrasonic system shall be inspected by manual UT or Magnetic Particle Examination.

Certification and traceability

All dimensions will be supplied with a 3.2 certificate according to EN 10204, endorsed by recognized and independent inspection agency. Marking shall be in SI units (B) accordance with API requirements & mill standard.

Dimensional control

All dimensions will be supplied according to API 5L clause 9.11; In addition, the following tolerances apply:

  1. Pipe body: +/- 0,75%
  2. Pipe end: +/- 0,5%
  3. Wall thickness: +15%, -12,5%
  4. Length: -0 / +100mm

Pipe Ends

Pipe Ends are beveled. End angle shall be 30°- 0°/+5°, root face shall be 1.6mm +/- 0.8mm and fitted with bevel protectors.

Protection

Pipes are varnished on the outside.
